TO MATONGÉ OR NOT TO MATONGÉ

Matongé, the symbolic heart of the African community in Brussels, used to be the meeting place for Congolese people of the former Belgian colony. To dance, to eat, to trade, to help students, to dress, to get your hair done in a proper African way. To this very day it is a hub for Africans, even if the pure African flavor has faded.  Brussels born, I have always been fascinated by the the duality of living in two cultures, about the thrill, the longing, the tension between history and the search for new identities.
